Graduate Fellow, Welfare Policy
Description

The Heritage Foundation’s Graduate Fellowship program provides participants with a hands-on introduction to public policy work. The typical Graduate Policy Fellow is in the transitional stage between completion of graduate school and launching a career in public policy. The Graduate Fellow will conduct original research under the mentorship of Heritage’s senior research analysts, and provide written quantitative and qualitative analyses.  The Graduate Fellow will work full-time in the offices of The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.  The fellowship is a semester based, 12-week program.  Start and end dates are determined with the Domestic Policy Studies Director. This is a paid fellowship; a temporary position that does not include employee benefits.

Fellowship Semester Dates 

  • 2022 Spring Program: January 10 through April 22
  • 2022 Summer Program: May 16 through August 5
  • 2022 Fall Program: September 6 through December 2

Fellowship Application Deadlines

  • Spring: October 17
  • Summer: January 23
  • Fall: July 3

Job Duties:

  • Conduct – under mentorship of visiting fellow - research on one or more projects, agreed upon with the fellow and Director prior to the fellowship.   Research will entail documenting current government programs, analyzing their effectiveness and working toward developing solutions that transform programs so that tangible results can be achieved to move our nation’s poorest families toward stability and economic self-sufficiency.
  • Draft papers, which may be published by The Heritage Foundation.
  • Attend lectures and briefings.
  • Interact with policy leaders in government, think tanks, community and non profit organizations, and former Heritage Fellows.

Qualifications:

Education:                  M.A. candidate or graduate

Experience:                 Entry level

Communication:         Excellent written and verbal

Technology:                MS Office and Outlook

Other Requirements: 

  • Understand and support the Heritage mission, True North conservative principles and the department's goals and objectives
  • Enrolled in, or recently completed, a graduate program in sociology, public policy, psychology, social work, economics, or statistics; other disciplines considered
  • Excellence in qualitative and/or quantitative analysis. Statistics experience a major plus
Housing:

Graduate fellows relocating to DC for the fellowship may live off-site or apply to live in housing near Heritage through our Housing Program. The program is designed for interns, so you would live with Heritage interns in a program that provides an enriching experience for young professional conservative interns at a reasonable cost. Conveniently located adjacent to The Heritage Foundation on the Senate side of Capitol Hill, our Intern Housing location is an easy walk to House and Senate office buildings. It is also nearby to Union Station for easy Metro access, making it an ideal location for interns on the Hill and throughout the Washington, D.C. area.
